That is something a teacher of mine used to say, and it immediately came to mind when it was pointed out that Vanessa's tragic attempt at reaching out was closed by MaryMary only to be restated - in a potentially insulting way.
who specialize in traditional artisan crafting and/or might be in an older age bracket. We'll leave it to you to decide what older age bracket means since many of us are all only as old as we feel. With that it mind, we'd still love to hear from anyone in the area that might be interested.
Now, I have to give them credit...they're trying! They've obviously been listening and realize that the aesthetic they've been pushing is too narrow and just not cutting it. They also changed the group they were looking for, notice the broader inclusion in MaryMary's OP versus Vanessa's.
However, admin have multiple tools at their exposure that would bypass the need of such posts, nevermind referring to the "older age bracket." But these tools we've been complaining about not working or being relevant aren't even being used by admin!!
Now THAT tells you something.
By the way, noone has yet posted in MaryMary's thread...let's not. Let's make admin use their own faulty tools so they get a taste of our daily life and maybe some ideas on making them better.

So...if I'm 19 but feel 90....yes, that makes sense.
I don't see the need for including an age requirement at all. Why couldn't they just ask for crafters in the areas they will be in and mention 'traditional crafts' as a plus? Then they can just pick and choose which ones they feel fit the criteria.
Or better yet, use the tools they provide for us! What a novel idea!
the Forum is Admin's Alchemy.
I immediately thought "you could use the search function, and geolocator. . . "
when I read the original post.
Maybe a Storque video on how to use the search function and geolocator would be helpful. and then show it to everyone in the office.
I think the Etsy admins know how to use the site tools. They don't want to interview people who are not known thru the forums, or are at least recommended by a forum participant. I mean a forum partipant with a high rating on the Etsy Coolness chart.
Also, I don't think the purpose of interviewing older artists or makers of more traditional crafts is an effort to broaden the aesthetic appeal of the site for buyers. It's more likely an attempt to recruit newly retired boomers with a crafting hobby. They'll purchase supplies! They have money to relist! Older artists who have been doing their creative thing to earn a living over decades don't need Etsy, as others have mentioned here.
Maybe someone should aslo email EtsyLbabs and just say "Where's my order?" with no other information, date, etsy username, listing number....and then they can scroll through hundreds of pages of their sold items with no info to go on other than an email address. That's always a fun way to blow an hour!!
Maybe it's time for a General Strike, Comrades.
No flagging, no ideas , no feedback, no help.
Deafening silence sounds good to me.
sjqon, I would add "no relisting".
silence is golden! And it speaks volumes. I'll go along with no posting in the formus.
It'll be fun. This is how it will look:
37 threads What is a treasury?
25 threads I didn't know vitage was allowed here.
45 threads She copied me and I'm upset.
100 threads, What do you love about etsy?
reNEWing... it's not relisting. it's renewing. you can only relist when an item expires or sells, otherwise, it's renewing.
:P
[is nitpicking just because... please to not be taking this serious... but it is technically "renewing"]
"sjqon, I would add "no relisting"."
But if I don't relist, I'll have to give up on cooking and cleaning and gardening and working at having a life in order to devote every freakin' moment to making something (anything!) to list so I will at least get seen by a possible buyer.
Bah Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Ha.
Is it too early for a drink. ;p
Make mine an etsybitch, straight up on the rocks.
(You guys should totally design an etsybitch cocktail!)
oh so true... and why would people on a site for handmade goods want to make more items, when they can just renew the same item until they've eaten all their profits.
i actually did blog about this the other day... it's a terrible thing to encourage. but if you were selling listings and the whole customer base your selling to was dedicated to spreading the joy that is renewing... and it was making you a profit... why stop it, right.
i get that etsy can't go and say to everyone that buys into the renewing thing that it's not really helping and it's a waste of their money... but, at some point, at least TRY to suggest that it might be eating the very same profits you're trying to make on the item.
and if people aren't there to make money, which is what some of those renewaholics who are obviously trying to make a sale, seem to like to shoot back if you suggest it's pointless... why are you paying etsy not to make money. why don't you just close your shop and sit on your ass? at least you'd save money.
i've never seen a place with so many people who are so intent on ways to sell items but not because they want to make money.
ummmm.... WHAT?
it's a TRAP!
oh, i guess it was yesterday morning. it's been a long day... already.
i just want to say that i like it here... because i thought i was one of the few people that thought these things, but the more i read, the more i realize... common sense might just still be alive and living on etsy.
I am glad you like it here staceyjean
Hey--It's 8 hours with not one single post in MaryMary's new and improved oldies thread. I am impressed. It looks like a stand!
They post in the forum because they want everyone to know that they are doing something that includes a different demographic than their usual. And then they misfire so badly because they have no grasp of how to present something appropriately.
Its back on page 3 now... still no responses.

Yeah, it kind of blows my mind. "Profit" is a dirty dirty word on Etsy...at least if you're a seller it is. Didn't you know you should be doing it all for the sheer joy of creating? And make sure to undercharge shipping and addLOTS OF FREEBIES TO EVERY ORDER too. Rah rah raaaaaaah!

Oh, amen burnout! That's when I realize that these people are in no way prepared to make a living doing their craft.
Etsy is sort of a weird place. I mean, maybe I'm crazy, but you can't create a viable business on 6 sales in six months of $10 items. I'm not a business major, but still..
I'm 20 something and yet am offended by that.
I pay Etsy not to sell my goods!
MaryMary's post is officially 24 hours old, without a single response.
Beautiful!
