Lalala they can't hear us

Etsy, the little kid with stubborn fingers in their ears.

What am I ranting about this time? Well, let's see. Etsy has made changes to their Privacy Policy. Did all members receive a notice? NO! Only those with opt-in news alerts and who log-in from the front page by clicking 'log in'.

Anyone who has not signed up to receive news alerts, who hits 'Your Etsy' to log in, who remain logged in for days, and the 90%+ who don't read the Storque or Forums will not know about this.

How many times do we have to tell you...such changes should be emailed to every fucking member of your site!!!!

And you know this! Right in that Storque article:

As noted in our Privacy Policy, it is our duty to notify the Etsy community of material changes to this policy.
We are sooo tired of telling you this.

So I looked, read it, and what is this?

"Etsy uses its own cookies for a number of purposes, including to...
...display the most appropriate advertising banners, based on your interests and activity on Etsy;.."

Hmm. for something they are cooking up, huh? I thought there was a big resounding NO to stuff like that. Oh yeah, that was on a Rokali thread I think.

"Etsy may be required to disclose personally identifiable information under special circumstances, such as to comply with subpoenas or when your actions violate the Etsy Terms of Use."

Oh right. Since the TOU are so vague.. that means anytime they feel like it. Got it.

"It may be necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person,"

Really? I heard death threats are poo-pooed.

"If Etsy makes material changes to this policy you will be notified here, by email, or other places Etsy deems appropriate."

So I guess emailing all people signed up isn't really necessary. They have the Dorque.

Yeah, I know most Privacy policies are similar at most other places.
Yeah, I'm picking on poor little Etsy. So?

But don't you know that emailing everyone would take days? Days! Poor poor Etsy...

________

I feel the average user has just as much chance of receiving policy changes using telepathy. As far as I know it is not considered spamming to just lock in with a good old fashioned mind meld.

Sending out official Privacy Policies is an annual event that all companies are in the middle of, I just resent the fact that important news/announcements are buried deep in the Dorque, don't read it, even when my eyelids are forced open with toothpicks.

Notice how Admins then post 1 or 3 or 5 items in the forums to direct sellers to the Dorque? Does this acknowledge that many sellers hate that thing?

While:
-several posts go on for pages with opinions and guesses, waters are getting murkier;
-Bugs don't get any Admin response at all, unless you have 5 hours to dig for an Admin post in the hundreds of pages of bug reports;
-seen a holiday plan yet? Me neither;
-co-op ads, showcases, and any other teeeeeeeny promo sellers might have access to are gone in 30 seconds----how's that for meeting the needs of your sellers?
-brand new articles by the DOZENS are scrolling in the Dorque every single day of every single week, while other urgent seller issues are ignored;
-the same issues are posted by sellers needing answers now that were hot topics 1 year ago, but Etsy cherry-picks what THEY think is important, damned if they give a hooty doooooty what sellers need.

Wait... this part, ""Etsy uses its own cookies for a number of purposes, including to...
...display the most appropriate advertising banners, based on your interests and activity on Etsy;.."

Does this mean Etsy is going to start selling advertising on its site? Are we going to have ugly ass banners all over the place? Ads for other peoples shops in our shops??? eh????

Might information be shared with, say, the IRS?

I don't see why they can't send out one mass email... Especially with all of the poop flying around the site lately. I don't even get my opt-in emails most of the time. This is a business, right?

I've been "opt-in" since I joined in January and I have only ever received 2 emails.

hammock hater I don't see how they should be reporting income to the IRS at this point, without ever collecting the SS# of US sellers.
The day Etsy ever asks me for my SS# is the day I delete my account.

I need to take some time and go through the new privacy policy line by line. I did this the last time they changed it and there were some very interesting changes.

They did not notify users by email last time at all, so this time is some improvement.
