Boo!

It's Halloween and nothing's scarier than Etsy admin! Especially when they dress up as their favorite sellers in cowls. And what exactly is Maria dressed up as? Someone who likes to roll in money maybe?!

Be afraid, very afraid, and be on the lookout for cowl-wearing zombies!

Looks like she has a tarp wrapped around her with paper money. So 'Tarp Money' maybe?

Halloween? Heck, right now it is Christmas -- with Santa, wreaths, and reindeer -- on the front page of Etsy.

OMG! I love the guy in the puffy shirt behind Maria eating a chicken wing.

Perfect! Now I can imagine all the derisive and nasty chitter chatter Admins have about sellers! Oh, I forgot, they already make fun of sellers every time they sit at their keyboards!

And holy cowl, they look as bad on Admins as I imagine they would look any anybody (even if I've never seen a real person wearing one). I guess cocky goes along with ka-ching! at the expense of sellers' reputations......

AHH.

I find Yokoo incredibly pretentious and...unattractive. There is nothing cute about her look.

Why would you dress up like that? So stupid.

It doesn't look like a fun party, either. And making fun of the many, many cowls on the FP is something Etsy sellers can do in the forums, but Admin should stay far away from doing anything like that, especially when you're going to post the pictures online afterwards.

Owl cowls said...

Paper money eh? I had to squint to see if my Etsy fees weren't plastered all over Maria.

There was a discussion about the "Etsy Girl" the FP favorites cater to. Yokoo fits the bill perfectly (pretentiousness and all). Blech.

Indeed. They are clueless and pathetic, and I'm surprised they weren't too embarrassed to post those very revealing (of their total lack of imagination) photos on the web.

They look like a bunch of tired suburban parents making a very half-hearted effort to seem somewhat in the spirit when they open the door to trick-or-treaters.

They would have been better off going to a Halloween store and buying some commercial costumes if they planned on putting their party pictures online.

The Etsy caterer, which I doubt was a member of the staff, was the only one showing any imagination, creativity, and/or skill.

Even a bunch of politicos and regular citizens outdoes the Etsy staff when it comes to Halloween creativity:

If I were Yokoo, I would honestly be pretty pissed. I know she has specifically and carefully developed an odd "character" if you will to sell her product. It is a bit like performance art, no? But so many koolaid drinkers have sucked it up by the cupfuls...

However, they are completely goofing on her, not complimenting her one bit. How embarrassing for Etsy to allow their employees to publicly post pictures in which they are mocking their sellers. It really is not cute, or ironic. It is unprofessional, rude and in most companies it would not at all be tolerated.

And, if the Etsy Admin can so easily "Do The Yokoo", I would suggest to Yokoo she needs to change her shtick ASAP. Unless she loves her little army of Etsy Admin minions who can copy her oddball persona in a minute or two and spread her ugly knitting evil around the world!

Just to comment, the artists on etsy were waiting for the new D&D's to come up with acceptable tagging and support for fine art of which there is plenty and high quality. But didn't happen. Right now at least 3 threads in the forum are from artists frustrated with etsy. Can't even get fine art on the FP, is it because paintings are not jewelry? The artists have a petition out to get some exposure. Some are moving to other sites.

Agree with you brandingconsultant, I'd be pissed too, even if I was the recipient of tens of thousands of dollars of free advertising from Etsy for over a year. If this is they way Etsy mugs their biggest money makers, imagine what they say about sellers on their shit lists?

Pin the tail on the donkey, anyone?

The faux pas by posting potentially libelous pix publicly means that, even if there were serious legal implications to Etsy branding, they sure aren't going to be paying attention until it's too late.

I'll be there to wave them off to the deadpool.

How are you able to ID the people in those pictures? From what I can see, none of them have captions and only a bare few have tags.

I can't stand it when professionals dress up at work - and true professionals usually do not. So I guess it figures the Etsy crew would.

But right now I'm more amused that I had an item on the FP this morning - it's nothing special. But it's an out of focus item with a muddy brownish background. True Etsy style. Had to laugh about that.

You know, for all the massive hype Admins give Halloween from August to Oct 31, you'd think their party would be the most fabulous in NYC, with fantastic handmade costumes and decor.

It looks totally lame-ass and laser-printed.

Disconnect much?

Ahhhhhhh where to start about Maria and those Etsy uneducated unprofessional idiots , Maria Is a Money Hungry Greek Bitch , nothing against the Greeks as I am one , but I don’t find myself wanting more than I have , universe RULES, since Maria became The new ceo Of etsy everything wend down the drain not that everything was not already there there, but it got worse, The shut down shops they kicked sellers off their site , the ones that confronted them about they way they run their site, and so on , , Where is Rob Kaolin this days ?
Maria , don’t you have enough Misery in your life , you make us so angry , you gone loose ETSY is going down , What happened to the handmade on ETSY ?
Like they say “ What goes around comes around “ they hurt so many sellers and they latest scam , double re-listing , just to get your Item vied

The hell with those losers ,

From the pictures, the costumes & decorations have to be the saddest I've ever seen. They talk the talk but they certainly are nowhere near walking the walk.

Did you read that Matt and Maria are going on a European trip later this month? Amazing how a company as tiny as Etsy, only just in the black figures, can afford that....

*sigh*

life-during-wartime said...

What a boring lot -- they look like an admin curated front page come to life.

What did Maria do to herself? It looks like she's wearing a black dress...couldn't she find some quirky, costumey accessories on Etsy to jazz it up, instead of putting on what looks like an embellished garbage bag?

There are so many things on Etsy they could have worn that would have been more attractive, fun, yet still professional.

The Etsy staff doesn't need a 'trends' guru. They need a Basics of Design bootcamp.

Old Hippie Bitch said...

As others have said, that party reeks of total lack of imagination.

Maria's costume looks like a bitchslap to sellers: she is a magnet attracting the hard-earned money we throw at Etsy.

Since nobody mentioned it yet: See the chick with a beer in one hand and a baby in the other? If she's its mother, I hope she isn't breastfeeding.

How sad. Etsy is just another wonderful idea destroyed by ordinary, uninteresting, talentless, unattractive individuals who seem to have taken over Brooklyn. Brooklyn NY, NYC, New York City. (Did anyone get that one?)They need to LEAVE. Only these fools can make Halloween look mundane and boring.

TullyDawg said...

What do you call a room full of quasi-hipsters in costume?

Target practice.

In other news, everyone's favorite go-to gal for dress up inspiration (no, not Kate Gosselin!) Yokoo herself did a deal with Urban Outfitters. So I hope the children in sweatshops the world over enjoy making her fugly knits that are based on previously published patterns anyway.

I'm so glad I got drunk on Halloween.

This shouldn't really surprise anyone who remembers Etsy's pathetic booth at Renegade (I think it was that show) last year. Wish I could find the links to whomever posted the pictures of their sad signage and thrown together table that was an embarrassment to the craft community.

FWIW, I don't think they were making fun of Yokoo, I think they were honoring her in their own way. I believe they think it's complimentary to try and emulate one of their faves, but their execution (as usual) leave a lot to be desired.

I agree with the lame-ass, but rather than a laser print, it reminded me of a faded xerox copy.

I can't figure out Maria's costume. Venture Capital? Miss MoneyBags? It's just a tarp. There has to be some kind of pun in there.

Ironically the captcha word for this post is "vomat". Seriously I can't make this stuff up.

Eclipse,

I'm pretty positive she is dressed as TARP Money.

"The Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) is a program of the United States government to purchase assets and equity from financial institutions to strengthen its financial sector. It is the largest component of the government's measures in 2008 to address the subprime mortgage crisis." -wiki

What I can't figure out is why would anyone what to do that? Maybe the guys in suits are the investors and its a play on how they 'bailed' them out with the 27 million.

__________

When sellers become famous outside Etsy, Etsy falls all over themselves to promote that person even more. When they have become well known because they have been on Etsy's FP every day for a year straight, how could the entire world miss them?

But what cracks me up, is when Etsy falls all over themselves to promote someone who becomes well known outside Etsy without Etsy's help. Like they wouldn't give them the time of day unless the rest of the world had first.

I had never heard of Yokoo before reading this forum, so I have no personal connection with her. I feel I must, however, come to her defense because the attacks against her here are personal and out of line. Maybe she is a favorite seller of Etsy admin, but so what? She personally has done nothing against you. Besides, you can see what perverted form Etsy's favoritism takes (making fun of her at Halloween, etc.). So lay off. Just as the enemy of one's enemy is not necessarily one's friend, the friend of one's enemy is not necessarily one's enemy.

The Righteous One said...

RRobin, I don't see any attacks on yokoo here in the comments, only a link to a story about her and comments on what admin's intention may be.

Yay for Yokoo said...

Yokoo's style is a bit out there for my taste, but I have to admire her branding. Yes, she got noticed by Admin, but that's a lot of knitting and crocheting for one person (assuming she does all her own work). It seems to me that she is an Etsy success story with the deal with UO, from a design perspective anyway.

Calling somebody "pretentious" and "unattractive," and her creations "monstrous" and "fugly," constitutes a personal attack in my book.

It's one thing to note that somebody is an Etsy admin favorite and gets preferential treatment. It's another thing entirely to insult that person just because they are an Etsy admin favorite.

The Funny One said...

Let's not get off track here with asides about personal attacks and all the usual hoopla used on the forums all the time. Etsy put Yokoo out there, so Etsy is responsible for pushing this "cult of personalities" which is how the whole site is run - by personalitiies making personal decisions. Hurt feelings and the rest of that crap is just childish & unprofessional in a multi-million dollar business.

Yokoo happens to be the center of attention because her store is the Etsy model for what's turned a "site for all things handmade" into a site that IMPOSES THE CULTURE (BRAND) OF ETSY on every store on the site. It's built entirely on a style that has little to do with handmade, and in fact, makes the personality much more important than the product.

And does anyone believe that the Etsy top ten stores make ALL their own products? Get real.

Etsy is a site built around personalities handpicked by Etsy because they mimic a narrowly defined style that has little to do with handmade.

It looks and reads like a Hollywood gossip sheet with pictures to match. A trap.

Eveline said...

I replied to the picture where they took the piss out of Yokoo, and got a reply on my Twitter saying that they asked Yokoo if it was alright before they went ahead and put the costumes on. Yokoo also replied saying she was fine with it.

While this is all lovely and great and wonderful, it still does not stop people from seeing Etsy Admin making fun of an Etsy seller. What a great image to send into the world! It's posted in the Dorque and on their Etsy Twitter page, where their sellers, potential buyers and investors can all see it.

But hey, it's all ok because Yokoo did not mind...

*deeeeeeeeeeppppp sigh*

The Cranky One said...

I just found this on Yokoo's flickr:

CupcakesMakeMeGag said...

Regardless of what Etsy admin does, and they are hardly the exemplars of good taste or good manners, what is "childish & unprofessional" is for sellers here to call other sellers names. I saw the name-calling, but I didn't see anyone here complaining about hurt feelings. I don't like cupcakes or Etsy admin either, Funny One, but your comment is a straw man and a red herring. Maybe Etsy is a "cult of personality." So why stoop to their level? Maybe "Etsy put Yokoo out there." So why not focus your criticism on those that put her there rather than her herself? As it is, the catty remarks (and there were three comments that called Yokoo "pretentious") could very easily be taken for sour grapes. Maybe they are and maybe they aren't, but the appearance of such gives EB a bad name. If people think this site is just about jealousy over not being a favored seller, then we all lose credibility.

The Righteous One said...

It's not about jealousy, it's about how god awful admin are...the public image of Etsy, the hypocrisy of the TOU implemented for some but not all, the concept of favorites.

And yes, people are allowed to express opinions about the figureheads Etsy puts out there. Because those figures represent all of us as sellers on Etsy. If they want the "iconic seller"s of Etsy to be a particular type of seller, then you bet your ass all of the other sellers have a right to comment on that! It's not about "why didn't you pick me?!" It's about "why in god's name did you not use common sense and represent us better?!"

In addition to the lack of creativity and idiocy displayed in public by admin (Renegade booth included).

There are some who will always call any commentary "jealousy", and there will always be those who do function on that. But the greater theme coming out is that admin do not think outside the hipster.
