We know that a one-click vacation mode option is a much-desired feature for our sellers, especially those with lots of inventory. We agree that it would be super helpful!
We are hopeful that we will be able to provide a solution. However, I cannot promise a timeline or say with certainty how this feature would work. It's something we have researched (thanks in a big part to a lot of great community feedback from you all) and thought about a lot in recent months.
I said we'll look into it, now run along renew some stuff!
we have to figure out how features work best on Etsy. How other sites do things does not always provide a relevant solution for us. There's a lot of complex back-end work that needs to be considered for any change to the site, especially one as potentially complex as vacation mode. Plus there are a lot of other projects that took priority over this in the past 3 years. It's not quite that black and white.

Sounds like we'll get a vacation mode around the same time miniature artists and doll makers get the category they deserve/need.
God forbid anything that benefits sellers could be possibly be higher priority than gift guides, or virtual labs, or the Dorque, or time machine, or pounce, or geolocator, or colors, or shop local, or the treasuries, or the showcases....
I'm sure I'm missing some, but it seems to me that fixing the search, stats and vacation mode are 3 biggies.
And you know what? If they said "No, we think the ramalamadingdong is a higher priority" I wouldn't like it, but I'd accept it. Sort of. At least I'd know they know I know.
Vacation mode is the new USD....they just keep stringing you along, pulling 'information' out of their arse.
i love it when they talk about the "back end work" ... the truth is... etsy was built poorly. it's got flash overload and i'm betting half the people in the IT department are completely thrown off by actionScript.
i imagine a new guy sitting down to that mess and going... erase it all!
seriously... etsy. ERASE IT ALL AND START OVER.
flash isn't the new black!
and there's a whole range of people NOT using it, or updating it.
Yep, this feature will get implemented right when they set up announcements about when to expect new features. Hell, that would mean that they'd have to keep to a schedule or something....
other projects took precedence???
like making the little swirly thing/ port checking thing to keep the Etsy masses busy while waiting for the Treasury to index???
I read these admin response and think that somewhere god is laughing and I'll wake up.
I was looking forward to hearing etsybitch about the rainbow function.
I sometimes wonder if they create things just so we can bitch about them.
Of course a rainbow was more important than a vacation button!
Of course.
The rainbow must have been inspired by the colors of the sprinkles on their cupcakes...
Actually, if Admin's off the wall Forum comments could be switched with the non-grammatical Dorque articles, I am sure it would all start to make sense!
Then, the Dorque will sound like the White House Press Secretary, and the "official statements" will start to look like just what they are. One big fat ugly scratchy bitchy totally whacked and wonky pile of bull-total-shit.
OOOOOOH, Etsy, someone had a Virtual Video session with you on bullcrap p.r. and forgot to invite us? Or was it all those big words you put together that made your heads explode?
"There's a lot of complex back-end work that needs to be considered for any change to the site"
Translation: "You can't even begin to understand the crap I have to fix in order to put a vacation mode in place...the previous programmer didn't know shit!"
bawahahahahah.... confused! that's exactly it. they need to OWN UP! shitty ground work means you can't fix the support beams later on.
"we have to figure out how features work best on Etsy."
translation: "I haven't gotten to that chapter in Programming for Dummies, and I don't want to skip ahead"
"Plus there are a lot of other projects that took priority over this in the past 3 years."
yeah, like making our totally sweet tutorial on how to make a hammock. did you see it?!? we worked so hard on that one and hope you find it super helpful.
plus once we were done scheduling cupcake parties and when to make our next super helpful failure of a tutorial --err, I mean - you-tube video there was no time left for all those silly.. uh, important things you guys have been hinting at.
raaiinbow
maandahhhhlaaaa......
Oh man....that rainbow mandala....
Oooh...pretty! Shiny!
Great, now where's the stuff that will help me sell my shit?
Check out the newest boner: Etsy is sending EMAILS to "certain sellers" from a "third party lawyer" asking for financial information:
http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5768189&page=7
My 6 year old nephew could come over and help with the legos. He's good with all that complex back-end stuff goings on. . .
So, do you guys think that Chad Dickerson - the new tech guy - will:
a. come in and fix things while teaching those who are still there.
b. quit after 3 weeks
c. fire half the tech staff & bring in his own people
d. acquire an appetite for baked goods & shiny, flashy things
I'm hoping he will shake things up a bit!! (What was that quote about hope breaking the heart?)
and NOW, they have a new voter application.
http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5768193
because THAT is really what we need. Is it evil that I'm pleased that there's not much response?
gladys, I think he'll last about 2 DAYS.
Hoping for c), but probably d) given the track record lately.
...but, but, but its a MANDALA, and its pretty and it spins and it, it, it...
Wait, what the hell does it do?
Oh, right...
nothing.
*sigh*
spring 2006 - first tentative enquiries in forum threads for a vacation or on-hold mode for sellers to use
"How other sites do things does not always provide a relevant solution for us."
That's funny, Etsy. It seems to me that if you're at all interested in customer service, you should be interested in relevant solutions for your sellers, not just Etsy, Inc. Seems to me that "black and white" is Etsy losing a lot of sellers as the result of grand foolishness like we've been seeing of late.
Amazingly, good customer service is almost always win-win-win, too. Go figure.
Yeesh.
(And I just opened my shop a few weeks ago with a teeny-tiny inventory...I really feel for longtime Etsy vets, with all of those battle scars and all.)
Perhaps the problem isn't them, but us. Maybe we are just asking the wrong question! Instead of asking for vacation mode, we need to ask for a really sparkly, shiny and rainbow-hued vacation mode button.
Yes, YES! I bet that would help move the request up the priority list!
You see, a perfect example of what is more important then a vacation mode. A voter tool that has cute little stars apparently. (Going by the first page of comments.)
i vote cute stars!!!! forget the buttons, and modes. let's make a VIDEO! weeeEEeeeEeeeee!!!11!
Maybe they will use the voting system to decide what should go in the pipeline. Then vote again to see what should come out of the pipeline. Perhaps a vote on a new name for the pipeline. Then a vote for or against having a pipeline at all.

I can think of some important "back-end work" that could be done...
I don't see it as "double talk". I see such statements as pretty clear messages - NO. I'm not quite sure why folks are finding this all so hard to figure out.
No vacation mode, shipping calculator, checkout improvements, listing generator, overhaul of feedback system or new categories. Etsy has responded - at this point their membership has chosen not to listen.
Funny - it's the sellers who are more passionate about improving the site than the owners. But since it's not a public company of what use is it to keep complaining?
Hi,
I'm really not an Etsy admin, but I play like I am on the forums.
Actually I run the big wheel. We bought the old wheel of fortune wheel and replaced the $ amounts with replies.
::spin....::
It's in the pipeline ::applause::
::spin...::
Other things are a higher priority ::applause and whistles::
::spin...::
It's being worked on, but we don't have a projected completion date ::cheers::
::spin...::
Thank you for bringing this to our attention ::catcalls and hoots::
::spin...::
Personal disputes are not to be brought on the forums ::booo's and hiss'::
Things like that. Anytime a thread is clamoring for attention from admin, I spin the wheel and pick a name. That admin has to answer on the thread.
And you thought we didn't care about you?
I may not be an IT expert, but I refuse to believe that a vacation mode is that difficult.
If they can suspend people's posting privileges, and suspend people's shops over 1 lousy negative feedback, then they can darn well figure out how to add a "suspend" button to our shops when we go on vacation.
I get the feeling that WE'RE the ones getting the "back end" work, and it's being done without lube. :-(
Charlotte Marie, you talk like Etsy is a social networking site, not one that deals with peoples businesses and livelihoods.
Of course sellers are passionate about wanting improvements.
Perhaps when you receive crappy service from a company you deal with, you're happy to walk away and forget about it. But others are not. How is that so hard for YOU to understand because it's a no-brainer for me.
notreallyadmin, I thought you actually did a variation of "pin the tail on the donkey".
Except the 'donkey' is a large poster size picture of Mr. Swimmy, and the 'tail' is an ... uhm ... *evil grin*
'You just don't understand how complicated it is to make a simple vacation mode. It's not simple at all. It is very very very complicated. Like, really complicated. We need to make lots and lots of cupcakes before we can figure out how to do this, because, it's very very complex, you know'.
Sigh.
I love it when Etsy is patronizing us.
Y'know what bothers me most about this? There's an online game that I play...it's not got the coding complexity of Etsy, I'm sure, but it's not simple, either. There have been more than a few occasions when I and other people have mentioned helpful things we'd like to see, and the guy who codes the whole thing literally does it RIGHT THEN. The admins are always very quick to answer questions about "can we have...?" and they'll tell us right up front their intentions. "No, we think that idea sucks," or, "Hey, we like that. We'll try to do that this week." AND THEN THEY DO IT. I don't know if Etsy admins are lazy, enjoy being condescending, or just need new backend people. I haven't decided. But it's got to be one of the three. And yes, I know changes like vacation mode require a lot of complex coding, but damn...either you can do it or you can't. Fess up.
All I know (and I can't bring it up in the forums, because heaven forbid I discuss anything that can be traced to any real transaction, ever) is that I had to help my mom with a major move last month, and not having a vacation mode really fucked me up.
I did what I could--put everything in edit mode, wrote disclaimers about dates and such EVERYWHERE and I still ended up with negative feedback because people didn't seem to get that I wasn't there. I actually did send an email to Admin about it, because it makes me afraid to ever close my shop for any period of time. All I ask is for something, anything, that would officially tell people that my shop is not open. Surely this isn't two years worth of difficult.
I work in the tech industry and have to be accountable to deadlines for my job. Why isn't etsy providing a list of what projects are on tap for 2008-2009, priority and scope? I know they are not a public company and perhaps they haven't got it together enough to manage to a typical project plan. But the templates are out there. Identify your stakeholders, define the "wants" vs. "needs". Price them out and budget accordingly.
I have a feeling that etsy is winging it.
I asked Maria in the chat a few months ago about vacation mode:

But i got a rainbow mandala so Im not mad anymore, im mesmerized and on a sugar high!
